Tribal Capacity, Environmental Outreach & Education Programs

Planning Department

About

SCIT’s Tribal Capacity, District Tribal, & Tribal Youth Initiative Program grants are funded through the BIA and GLRI to develop and expand environmental education learning opportunities for the surrounding community, Tribal members, and Tribal youth to increase and better support interest, knowledge, and collective stewardship actions to help care for Mother Earth. Our goals include: learning about environmental issues, how to better protect and manage our Tribal natural resources while facilitating, and innovating continuous learning, professional development, and sustainable growth. We look forward to providing input on the development and implementation of local, meaningful place-based learning opportunities that will assist the Tribal community in learning about natural systems and resources; how precious and unique the Great Lakes ecosystems, history, and culture are; while expanding on natural resource careers; and environmental actions that can be taken to help our local resources.

We hope to further educate the next generations about Great Lakes ecosystems and teach the community skills needed to enter the environmental and protection workforce. This will be done by means of land management, program development, outreach materials, community initiatives, events, giveaways, professional development, and natural resource projects, workshops, or trainings to support planning, development, and implementation of Tribal, Lakewide Action Management Plans (LAMPs), and Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement (GLWQA) priorities and actions.
